FIFA World Cup 2026 Winner: Spain Beat Argentina 1-0 After Extra Time

Spain have won the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time at the MetLife Stadium in New York. The triumph gives Spain their second World Cup title, their first since 2010, and marks a new chapter in the history of Spanish football.
The final was a tense and hard-fought contest, with Spain controlling possession but struggling to break down Argentina’s stubborn defense. The deadlock was finally broken in the 106th minute when substitute Ferran Torres volleyed home a cross from Nico Williams. The goal sent Spanish fans into ecstasy and left Argentina heartbroken.
Argentina, the defending champions, were forced to play most of extra time with ten men after Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card late in regular time. The numerical disadvantage proved fatal, as Spain capitalized on the space and scored the decisive goal. For Lionel Messi, who was playing in what is widely expected to be his final World Cup, the defeat was a bitter end to a legendary international career.
Spain’s victory was built on a core of exceptional young talent. Lamine Yamal, at 19 years and six days, became the third-youngest player ever to feature in a World Cup final, while Pau Cubarsi, also 19, was a rock at the back. This young generation, combined with experienced leaders like Rodri and Unai Simon, suggests that Spain could dominate international football for years to come.
The champions also achieved a unique milestone by becoming the first nation to hold both the men’s and women’s World Cup trophies at the same time. Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon was awarded the Golden Glove for keeping seven clean sheets, while Rodri received the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player. France's Kylian Mbappé won the Golden Boot as the top scorer.
The 2026 tournament was the first to feature a 48-team format, with 104 matches played across three host nations: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The final also featured a historic half-time show, with performances by Madonna, Shakira, BTS, and Justin Bieber.
For Argentina, it was a night of what-ifs. Despite their dominance in previous rounds, they could not find a way past Spain’s disciplined defense. Messi, visibly emotional at the final whistle, was consoled by his teammates as Spain lifted the trophy.
