India Beat Pakistan by 19 Runs in Asian Games Final

India successfully defended the Asian Games men's cricket gold medal on Saturday, beating arch-rivals Pakistan by 19 runs in a tense final at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, with Hasan Nawaz's brilliant 96 ultimately falling agonisingly short of the target.

Toss and Team News

India won the toss and elected to bat first at Korogi Sports Park. As has become customary in recent India-Pakistan cricket encounters, there were no handshakes between the two sides at the toss. India fielded a squad built around Shreyas Iyer's captaincy, while Pakistan were led out with Sahibzada Farhan and Maaz Sadaqat opening the chase.

India Post 211/6 in 20 Overs

India's innings was built around a late assault from Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube. After India slipped from 128/3 to 133/5 following the dismissals of Ishan Kishan (bowled by Arafat Minhas for 20) and captain Shreyas Iyer (caught off Abrar Ahmed for 21), Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube added a rapid 62-run partnership to rescue the innings.

Tilak Varma finished unbeaten on 51 off just 22 balls, hitting three fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 231.81, while Shivam Dube contributed 27 off 15 before being dismissed by Ahmed Daniyal in the final over. The pair plundered 57 runs off the last three overs alone, powering India past the 200-run mark and to a final total of 211/6.

Hasan Nawaz's Heroics Not Enough for Pakistan

Chasing 212 for gold, Pakistan were given a real chance by a sensational innings from Hasan Nawaz, who smashed 96 off just 51 balls with five fours and seven sixes. He found good support from Saim Ayub, who made 29 off 22 balls before being caught by Washington Sundar off the bowling of Shivam Dube.

Despite Nawaz's heroics, Pakistan could not quite get over the line. With the equation still in India's favour deep into the innings, Shivam Dube struck again in the final over, having Hasan Nawaz caught behind by Sanju Samson off the very last ball. Pakistan finished on 192/6 after their 20 overs, falling 19 runs short of India's total.

Turning Point

The turning point of the match came in the death overs of both innings. India's 57-run burst in the final three overs of their batting innings proved decisive, giving Pakistan a target that even a near-century from Hasan Nawaz could not chase down. At the other end, Shivam Dube's two crucial wickets — Saim Ayub and Hasan Nawaz — broke the back of Pakistan's chase at the moments it mattered most.

A Historic Win for India

With this victory, India's men's team successfully defended the Asian Games cricket gold medal they first won in Hangzhou in 2023, and the win also marked India's seventh consecutive T20I victory over Pakistan. The result came shortly after India's women's team had also claimed gold in their own competition, giving India a cricket gold-medal double at the 2026 Asian Games.
