A Step Toward Peace, But Thorns on the Path

Today, June 22, 2026, the world's political attention once again focused on the Swiss mountain town of Burgenstock. The first round of high-level talks between the United States and Iran was successfully concluded, hosted by Pakistan and Qatar. These talks were the first formal technical phase after the "Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding," which was signed last week by US President Donald Trump, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as mediator.


Pakistan and Qatar announced in their joint statement that the talks were held in a positive and constructive environment. During this, a 60-day roadmap was agreed upon, under which technical-level talks will continue. A high-level committee was also established to provide political oversight of the mediation.


Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on social media that Pakistani and Qatari mediation had made significant progress in ending the Lebanon war. He further stated that sanctions on oil and petrochemical exports have been lifted, the blockade has been removed, some frozen assets have been released, and a major reconstruction and development plan has been launched for Iran.


The US delegation was led by Vice President JD Vance, while the Iranian delegation was led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.


Despite this progress, several challenges remain. During the talks in Burgenstock, Iran had announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. On Friday, 32 ships crossed the strait, while on Saturday the number dropped to 26. However, after the talks, a communication line has been established to ensure the safe passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.


President Trump had threatened new attacks on Iran before the talks. He also criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for rejecting US requests to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.


A factory blast in Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City left at least 54 people injured and 18 missing. President Trump claimed that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer would resign, citing failure in immigration and energy policies.


Due to the progress in peace talks, oil prices have dropped significantly. Brent crude fell to $80.17 per barrel, far below May's high of $126.41. Asian stock markets also rallied, with Japan's Nikkei up 1.9 percent and South Korea's market up 2.6 percent.

Today's talks have proven that peace between the US and Iran is being paved through the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar. Pakistan has accomplished what major powers failed to achieve. However, the success of this agreement depends on several factors. First, building trust between Iran and the US — both parties must fulfill their commitments. Second, the restoration of the Strait of Hormuz — Iran must avoid acting on its threats. Third, Israel's role — as long as Israel continues its operations in Lebanon, this agreement will remain at risk.


US Vice President JD Vance met directly with Iranian officials, which is a significant development. But President Trump's controversial statements and threats could harm this process.


This agreement stands at a fragile moment. If all parties fulfill their responsibilities, a new chapter of peace could open in the Middle East. But if any party backs away from its commitments, this entire structure could collapse again.


For Pakistan, this is a golden opportunity to build on its diplomatic success. But for this, it is essential to maintain trust among all parties and immediately address any misunderstandings.
