Islamabad: June 13, 2026
Multiple explosions were heard late last night on the strategic island of Qeshm and the coastal city of Sirik in Iran's southern Hormozgan province. Iranian state media reported that air defense systems were activated in the affected areas.
Details of the Explosions
According to Iran's state TV (IRIB), six explosions were heard on Qeshm island early Wednesday morning, caused by enemy projectiles. Three explosions also occurred in Sirik. The semi-official Tasnim News Agency confirmed six explosions in Sirik and Qeshm, stating that US warplanes targeted these areas. Mehr News reported three explosions in Sirik and three in Bandar Abbas.
Air Defense Activated and Damage
Air defense systems were immediately activated on Qeshm island following the blasts. Iranian state sources said that two strategic water reservoirs in the Bomani district of Sirik were completely destroyed in the US strikes, cutting off drinking water supply to the area. However, the governor of Qeshm island clarified that the island's commercial ports were not damaged.
Impact on the Strait of Hormuz
Following these incidents, Iran's "Khatam al-Anbiya" military command announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to all maritime traffic. However, US Central Command denied this claim, stating that commercial vessels were passing through as normal.
US Position
The US had earlier carried out defensive airstrikes on southern Iran in response to the downing of an American Apache helicopter. Central Command confirmed that Iranian air defense systems, radars, and drone command units were targeted.
Iranian Response
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Iran will respond firmly to any attack. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched drone and missile attacks on the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and the Al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan, destroying F-35 fighter jet shelters.
Pakistan Times Live is closely monitoring the situation.
