Chasing a Mirage: Can Israel Eliminate Hezbollah?

Special Report by Pakistan Times Live

Islamabad: June 07, 2026

The dream of defeating Hezbollah, Israel's most formidable challenge for nearly five decades, continues to lure Israeli leadership. But the question remains: can this dream become a reality? Or is it a mirage that repeatedly draws Israel in, only to push it deeper into the quagmire?

**The Role of the United States: Obstacle or Supporter?**

According to analysts, the United States is not preventing Israel from continuing its military operations in Lebanon. Despite paper-based ceasefire mediations, the US is not acting as any real obstacle on the ground. This explains why Israeli forces have not only entered southern Lebanon but have crossed the Litani River, advanced to the outskirts of Nabatieh, and recaptured the historic Beaufort Castle.

**Hezbollah: A Reality That Cannot Be Denied**

Research indicates that Israeli military operations in the spring of 2024 and 2026 have inflicted serious damage on Hezbollah. Most of its senior commanders have been killed, its tunnel networks have been destroyed, and its elite force has been degraded.

Yet, despite all this, Hezbollah remains the most powerful military force in Lebanon — a state within a weak state. Israel's biggest challenge is that fully disarming Hezbollah would require a full-scale invasion and prolonged occupation of all of Lebanon, the political and military costs of which are immense.

**The Price of Disarming Hezbollah: Civil War**

Experts suggest that pressuring the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah would mean inviting "civil war in Lebanon," especially if Israel is allowed to occupy large swathes of Lebanese territory. The Lebanese government itself is helpless in this situation, as it cannot match Hezbollah's military power.

**The Iran Factor: Giving the War a New Direction**

Another crucial aspect is that when Israel attacked Iran, it gave Hezbollah a new purpose. Hezbollah is now presenting itself as the defender of Lebanon and an ally of Iran. It has changed its strategy and emerged as an organized resistance force.

**A Lesson from History: Every Attack Brought a New Problem**

History is a witness that whenever Israel has launched a ground operation in Lebanon, it has emerged with a newer, more complex problem. The 1982 Israeli operation gave birth to Hezbollah. The 2006 operation also proved inconclusive. And now, in 2026, Israel is once again chasing this mirage.

**The Path Forward: No Option But Diplomacy**

Experts agree that the only way out is diplomacy. The efforts under Pakistan's mediation, the direct Lebanese-Israeli talks in Washington, and the United Nations' attempts are rays of hope. However, Hezbollah's fierce opposition to these talks and Israel's continuation of military operations are making this path extremely difficult.

Pakistan Times Live's analysis suggests that the more Israel advances this war, the further it will move from a solution. The only path to peace in the region is a political and diplomatic one, not the continued use of military force. The dream of eliminating Hezbollah may forever remain a mirage.

Pakistan Times Live is closely monitoring the situation and will provide readers with further analysis and breaking news soon.
