Pakistan and Afghanistan: Cross-Border Attacks Continue

On June 20, 2026, relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have once again plunged into severe tension. The Afghan Taliban government carried out airstrikes on Thursday night in Pakistan's provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, targeting alleged militant hideouts. According to the Afghan Ministry of Defense, these strikes targeted ISIS-K hideouts that were being operated with the support of "opposition intelligence circles."

Afghanistan claims that several "important targets" were hit in these strikes, but no details about casualties or damage have been provided. The Taliban government described these strikes as necessary for its security and stability.

Pakistan has categorically rejected these claims. Pakistan's Ministry of Information stated that "these claims are false as always" and that only an "initial drone" from Afghanistan entered Pakistani airspace, which was immediately identified and shot down. Pakistan maintains that terrorist camps are actually located and operating in areas under Afghan Taliban control, and that Afghanistan is providing shelter to these groups.

Tensions escalated further when Pakistan carried out airstrikes last week in Afghanistan's provinces of Kunar, Khost, and Paktika. According to the United Nations, at least thirteen civilians were killed and ten injured in these strikes, while the Afghan Taliban claims that thirteen people, including eleven children, were killed and fourteen injured. Pakistan says twenty-six militants were killed in these strikes.

The ongoing tension between the two countries has put the border ceasefire at serious risk. The ceasefire reached in March broke down within weeks, and peace efforts mediated by China have also failed. According to the United Nations, at least three hundred and seventy-two Afghan civilians were killed and four hundred injured in cross-border fighting in the first three months of twenty twenty-six.

Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari said in a statement during this tension that terrorist elements want to damage Pakistan's diplomatic achievements and peace efforts.

At nine in the morning, a passenger pickup truck was targeted with a remote-controlled IED in Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries.

At ten in the morning, another blast occurred on the way while the injured were being taken to the hospital, causing further injuries. According to police, at least seven people were killed and three injured in these blasts.

At twelve noon, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attacks and said that the government will bring those responsible to justice.

At six in the evening, Afghanistan claimed to have carried out airstrikes inside Pakistan, which Pakistan rejected.

Russia and Ukraine: Drone Warfare and Intense Clashes on Frontlines

The situation in the Russia-Ukraine war remained extremely tense over the past twenty-four hours. Ukraine carried out its largest drone attack on Moscow on June eighteen, involving seventy-six drones. The attack severely damaged the Moscow Oil Refinery, forcing it to be closed indefinitely.

On June twenty, Russian air defense shot down five Ukrainian drones over the Crimean city of Sevastopol. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have shot down one hundred and eighty-seven Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight.

Meanwhile, a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv city killed one person and injured nine others. A guided aerial bomb destroyed a residential building in Kharkiv's Kholodnohirskyi district.

Ukrainian forces targeted the Henichesk Strait bridge in the Kherson region, a key route for Russian forces to supply from the Crimean peninsula to southern Ukraine. Additionally, Ukraine targeted a Russian Pantsir-S air defense system in the Zaporizhzhia region and drone command posts in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Belgorod regions.

Total Russian military casualties are estimated at approximately one million three hundred ninety thousand six hundred sixty from February twenty-fourth, twenty twenty-two to June twentieth, twenty twenty-six, including an increase of one thousand two hundred forty in the past twenty-four hours.

At eight in the morning, Ukrainian drone attacks began over the Crimean city of Sevastopol, which were neutralized by Russian air defense.

At ten in the morning, a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv city killed one person and injured nine others.

At two in the afternoon, Ukraine targeted the Henichesk Strait bridge and multiple Russian military positions.

At four in the evening, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have shot down one hundred and eighty-seven Ukrainian drones.

Analysis: Two Fronts, One Global Crisis

There is a deep connection between the Pakistan-Afghanistan and Russia-Ukraine conflicts. Russia and the Afghan Taliban recently signed a military-technical cooperation agreement, which could affect the regional balance. Russia recognized the Taliban as Afghanistan's official government in July twenty twenty-five, after which relations between the two countries have significantly improved.

A common factor in both conflicts is that small and cheap technology like drones has begun challenging major powers. Ukraine is carrying out drone strikes as far as Moscow, while Afghanistan is also using drones against Pakistan.

US-led negotiations are effectively frozen, while peace efforts mediated by China have also failed. The silence of the international community is being strongly condemned by civilians in these regions.

Conclusion

The wars on these two fronts could have the same outcome: if global powers do not intensify their mediation efforts, these conflicts could become a serious threat not only to these regions but to global peace and stability worldwide.
