Israeli Supreme Court Orders: Access for ICRC to Palestinian Prisoners

Tel Aviv: The Israeli Supreme Court has issued a landmark ruling, striking down a government policy that had barred representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from visiting Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

The Court determined that by preventing the Red Cross from visiting detainees, the government had violated both domestic and international law. Consequently, the Court ordered the immediate resumption of these visits, which had been suspended since October 2023.

This marked the first time in 50 years that Israel had blocked Red Cross visits to detainees. Several human rights organizations, including the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) and Physicians for Human Rights, had legally challenged the policy.

The ICRC welcomed the decision and stated that it is in active communication with Israeli authorities to resume its humanitarian work as soon as possible. The ruling comes amidst growing global concern regarding the treatment of Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody.
