New Storm in the Middle East: Iranian Attack on US Base and Diplomatic Deadlock
The Pakistan Times Live — Special Analysis
The fragile efforts for peace in the Middle East are once again in danger, as tensions in the region have reached a new and dangerous turn. On Monday, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officially announced that it had targeted a US military base in Kuwait in a retaliatory strike. This military action is a direct response to the American aggression on Iran's communication tower in Hormozgan province.
According to the IRGC Aerospace Force, the attack was carried out on the same air base from which operations were launched to target Iranian communication infrastructure. Kuwait's official news agency (KUNA) confirmed that sirens were sounded across the country and air defense systems attempted to intercept incoming missiles and drones.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed in a statement that American fighter jets carried out an immediate retaliatory action. They claimed to have destroyed Iranian air defense systems, a ground control station, and two attack drones that posed a threat to ships in international waters.
These clashes occurred at a time when behind-the-scenes negotiations are underway to make the fragile ceasefire established in April permanent. Reports indicate that both sides are reviewing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to extend the ceasefire for another 60 days. However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai warned that Washington's contradictory stance and Israel's military actions in Lebanon are creating deep mistrust, slowing down and making the diplomatic process uncertain.
Our analysis shows that contrary to former President Trump's recent social media claims that Tehran is "eager to make a deal," ground realities remain highly unstable. Although messages are being exchanged through diplomatic channels, the series of retaliatory military actions continues to pose a constant threat to regional security.
As Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated, until a clear and transparent outcome emerges, current diplomatic speculations should be treated with caution. The path to peace in the region remains blocked due to broader security crises.
