Pakistan has emerged as a global peacemaker following its successful mediation between the United States and Iran, ending a three-month military conflict that had destabilized the Middle East. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the peace agreement in June 2026, with the formal signing taking place in Switzerland on June 19. US President Donald Trump confirmed the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil supplies.
The agreement, known as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, provides for an immediate permanent ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and a framework for further negotiations on Iran's nuclear program and regional security. Pakistani leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, had actively pursued diplomatic engagement since the conflict began, securing an initial ceasefire in April that was extended at Pakistan's request.
Pakistan's mediation efforts have drawn widespread international praise. UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the deal as a critical step toward peaceful settlement of the conflict and expressed deep appreciation for Pakistan's role as an arbitrator. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed the agreement as an important development for peace in the region and specifically thanked Pakistan for its exceptional mediation efforts.
Saudi Arabia welcomed the agreement and called for detailed negotiations over a sixty-day period toward a permanent accord. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed the agreement and congratulated President Trump as well as mediators from Pakistan and Qatar. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong commended the efforts of Pakistan and other mediating countries. The European Union foreign policy chief described the deal as a major breakthrough that could enable deeper negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme and regional issues. Leaders from China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, and Canada also praised Pakistan's sustained diplomatic efforts.
Perhaps most remarkably, the hashtag #PakGlobalPeaceMaker trended globally on social media platform X, with Indian academics, analysts, and public figures publicly acknowledging Pakistan's achievement. Indian professor Ashok Swain called the development a victory for Iran and a moment of honor for Pakistan, noting that efforts to isolate Pakistan may have backfired. Defense analyst Pravin Sawhney described Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's efforts as impressive.
Author Atul Khatri expressed gratitude, writing that he never thought he would tweet something positive for Pakistan. Defense expert Abhijit Iyer-Mitra congratulated both Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, noting that successful mediation requires both skill and the willingness to take risks—qualities Pakistan displayed effectively. Film critic RK thanked Pakistan for helping avert a potentially devastating conflict, calling it a service not just to the region but to the entire world.
The conflict had closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of the world's oil supply passes. The reopening of the strait as part of the peace agreement has restored freedom of navigation and eased pressure on global energy markets.
This diplomatic success marks a significant milestone in Pakistan's foreign policy and cements its position as a credible peacemaker in international conflicts. Federal Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal noted that Pakistan is emerging as an influential UN-style mediator on the world stage, earning widespread appreciation for playing a balanced role while maintaining strong relations with China, the United States, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized that Pakistan is increasingly being recognized as a peacemaking state worldwide, with the global community viewing Pakistan with respect due to its collective efforts toward peace. The widespread international recognition, including unprecedented praise from Indian voices, and the viral #PakGlobalPeaceMaker trend underscore how this achievement has reshaped perceptions of Pakistan's diplomatic capabilities.
Pakistan's successful mediation between the United States and Iran represents a historic milestone in global diplomacy. As Pakistan continues to promote dialogue, mediation, and peaceful conflict resolution, this achievement sets the foundation for its expanded diplomatic engagement in regional and international affairs for years to come.
