Shahed 136: Iran's Simple Drone That Changed the Rules of Modern Warfare
Special Report by Pakistan Times Live
Islamabad: June 10, 2026
Ever since Iran started using the Shahed 136 drone in its attacks against Israel, this drone has become the subject of every discussion. People call it a "kamikaze" or "suicide drone", but the reality is that it has completely changed the economics of war. This is not a high-tech weapon, but a simple invention that works very effectively.
How does it work?
The design of Shahed 136 is very old and simple. It is launched from a small truck or launcher, after which it automatically begins flying on its pre-programmed path. It has a GPS installed, which helps it navigate toward the target. When it reaches directly above the target, it falls straight onto it and explodes. That is why it is called "suicide" because it destroys itself to destroy the target.
Its biggest advantage is that it can fly very low, at an altitude of only fifty to sixty meters. Flying at such a low altitude allows it to evade conventional radar and makes it very difficult to intercept.
What does it cost to build?
Here is the point that has surprised everyone. The cost to build a Shahed 136 is only between twenty to fifty thousand dollars. Yes, you heard that correctly. This is a weapon that any economy can easily produce in thousands of numbers.
No special factory or machinery is needed to build it. Its body is made of ordinary fiberglass, the engine is a common motorcycle engine, and it has a cheap GPS module. This is why Iran has produced it in very large numbers and also supplied it to its allies.
Why is it expensive to stop?
As cheap as the Shahed 136 is to produce, it is just as expensive to stop. To shoot it down, modern air defense systems such as the American Patriot or THAAD missiles must be used. The cost of one such missile is millions of dollars. Understand, you are shooting down a fifty thousand dollar drone with a four million dollar missile. This is economic warfare, and in this, the side that has to spend more is the one losing.
Use in recent war
In the past two days, Shahed 136 drones have struck multiple important locations. According to reports, one such drone was used in an attack near Kuwait's international airport, damaging the runway. Similarly, a commercial ship was targeted with the same drone in the Strait of Hormuz. The drone was also spotted near the US embassy in Iraq, but was shot down.
These drones are usually sent at night, when detecting them becomes even more difficult.
Can it be completely neutralized?
According to experts, completely stopping Shahed 136 is almost impossible unless you have an unlimited budget. The only solution is to destroy it before it is launched, meaning by attacking its warehouses or factories. But once it is in the air, shooting it down is possible, but at a very high cost.
Analysis by Pakistan Times Live
Shahed 136 has taught the world a lesson: expensive weapons are not always victorious in modern warfare. Sometimes a cheap, simple, mass-produced weapon can render a billion-dollar defense system useless. This drone will remain an important topic in global politics and military strategies for many years to come.
