Standing approximately 181 meters tall and 2.3 kilometers long, this dam was completed in 2006 and has a generating capacity of over 22,500 megawatts, making it more powerful than any other hydroelectric project in the world.


The construction of this dam was no easy task. Approximately 1.3 million people had to be relocated from their homes, as hundreds of villages, towns, and historical sites were submerged underwater. This relocation is considered one of the largest planned displacements in human history. At the same time, experts have noted that thousands of minor earthquakes and landslides have been reported in the area due to increased geological pressure since the dam's construction. This highlights how large-scale construction can have profound effects on natural systems. On the positive side, the dam has been highly effective in flood control and increasing river navigation capacity, leading to a significant reduction in shipping costs.


2. Itaipu Dam, Brazil and Paraguay


Second on the list is the Itaipu Dam on the Parana River, a joint venture between Brazil and Paraguay and an excellent example of international cooperation. Completed in 1984, this dam remained the world's largest hydroelectric plant for many years. Today, approximately 90 percent of Paraguay's electricity comes from this dam, while a significant portion of Brazil's power grid also depends on it.


Interestingly, although Itaipu lags behind Three Gorges in installed capacity, it often produces electricity equal to or greater than Three Gorges on an annual basis. The reason for this is that the flow of the Parana River remains relatively uniform throughout the year, while the Yangtze experiences seasonal variations. The construction of this dam involved diverting the river's course and moving millions of tons of earth and rock — an engineering feat in itself. This dam is not only a source of energy but also a symbol of long-term diplomatic and economic cooperation between two nations.


3. Baihetan Dam, China


Third on the list is another Chinese marvel, the Baihetan Dam on the Jinsha River. Completed in 2022, this dam stands approximately 289 meters tall and features turbines that can each generate 1,000 megawatts of electricity — the most powerful single-unit turbines in the world. The dam's reservoir can hold over 20 billion cubic meters of water, enabling stable and abundant power generation throughout the year.


This dam is a key component of China's strategy to reduce its reliance on coal. Generating over 62 terawatt-hours annually, it provides energy security to the country's western provinces and promotes industrial development. The Baihetan Dam demonstrates that China not only has the capability to build on a massive scale but also integrates cutting-edge technology into its projects to ensure both efficiency and safety.


4. Xiluodu Dam, China


Fourth on the list is another Chinese dam — the Xiluodu Dam, also located on the Jinsha River, which is the upper section of the Yangtze. This is one of the tallest arch dams in the world, with a height of approximately 285 meters. Construction began in 2005 and was completed in 2013, and its reservoir can hold 12.67 billion cubic meters of water.


The Xiluodu Dam was not built solely for power generation; it also plays a critical role in flood control and sediment management. In particular, it helps reduce sediment pressure on the downstream Three Gorges Dam, improving the management of the entire Yangtze system. The project cost approximately 6.2 billion dollars and is part of China's comprehensive vision for river management, where multiple dams work together to form an integrated system.


5. Tarbela Dam, Pakistan


Fifth on the list is our own Tarbela Dam, located on the Indus River and the largest earth-filled dam in the world. It used approximately 106 million cubic meters of earth and rock. This dam was primarily constructed for irrigation and flood control, with power generation capacity added later.


Tarbela Dam serves as the backbone of Pakistan's agricultural economy, helping to irrigate millions of acres of land. However, the dam faces a significant challenge — the Indus River carries vast amounts of silt and sediment from the Himalayas, which has reduced the reservoir's original capacity by approximately 35 percent. To address this issue, extension projects have built additional power generation tunnels to maximize energy production before sedimentation further reduces capacity.
