Three Dimensions of Today's Global Landscape: Peace Deal, G7's Stance and the War in Lebanon

Today marks a significant turning point in history. The historic peace agreement between the United States and Iran has come into effect, capturing the world's attention. Under this agreement, Iran will immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the US will lift its naval blockade. This is the same agreement that will pave the way to end the war that began on February 28, which has left the entire Middle East in turmoil.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on his X page today that the "Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding" has been electronically signed by the presidents of the United States and Iran, and he has endorsed it as the mediator. This memorandum has come into immediate effect. The key provisions of this agreement include the immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, reopening the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping, allowing Iran to sell oil, and returning Iran's frozen assets. Under this agreement, Iran will also be provided with a $300 billion reconstruction fund.

Interestingly, this agreement consists of only 14 points and was signed electronically between the presidents, while the formal ceremony scheduled for Friday in Switzerland has been cancelled. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei explained this decision, stating that presidential signatures "will increase the cost of violating it."

The G7 summit currently underway in Évian-les-Bains, France, has described this agreement as a historic opportunity that can prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. In their joint statement, G7 leaders made it clear that Iran will never acquire nuclear weapons. Important decisions were also made at this summit, including increasing military aid for Ukraine, supporting the right to unhindered traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, and committing to diversifying energy supply routes to reduce global dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. G7 leaders have called for an immediate and robust ceasefire in Lebanon and have announced support for efforts to disarm Hezbollah.

Despite the announcement of the peace agreement, Israel has continued its operations in southern Lebanon. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the death toll has reached 3,884 since tensions escalated on March 2, with 11,856 people injured. In the past 24 hours alone, 58 people have been killed in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military has focused its operations on the city of Nabatieh and its outskirts, as well as the Aqlum al-Tuffah area, where Hezbollah units are present. One Israeli soldier has been killed and seven wounded. Local residents of Nabatieh say the city has become empty again and people cannot return to their homes. The Lebanese army has also appealed to citizens to delay their return due to the risk of Israeli violations and attacks.

In this entire story, Pakistan's role stands out the most. Pakistan not only mediated the negotiations but also gave its name to this agreement - the "Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding." Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif specially praised Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, whose tireless efforts, selfless dedication, and crucial role made this breakthrough possible.

This agreement is proof of Pakistan's diplomatic power, which has accomplished what major powers failed to do. However, the success of this agreement depends on Israel's behavior. As long as Israel does not stop its operations in Lebanon, this peace will remain confined to paper. G7 support can give this agreement international legitimacy, but Israel's challenge remains. Trump's statement that this agreement is not final and his threat of "returning to bombing" is also concerning. For Pakistan, this is a golden opportunity to build on this success, for which the international community will need to pressure Israel to respect the agreement.
