Three Fronts, One War, and a Fragile Ray of Peace

The world today is divided across three major fronts. On one side, the historic peace agreement between the United States and Iran is in its final stages; on another, world leaders at the G7 summit in France are united in supporting this deal; and on the third, Israel continues its operations in southern Lebanon, as if the talk of peace never happened. These three events are interconnected and will decide the future of the Middle East.

After years of prolonged tension between the United States and Iran, a ray of peace is finally emerging. On June 19, a historic agreement will be signed between the two countries in Burgenstock, Switzerland, with Pakistan hosting the ceremony. This agreement will initiate a 60-day negotiation process and pave the way to end the three-month-long bloody war. Under this deal, there will be an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened for commercial shipping, Iran will be allowed to sell oil, and Iran will commit to not developing nuclear weapons.

US President Donald Trump has called this agreement a success, stating that the Strait of Hormuz will be fully reopened by Friday and will remain toll-free permanently. He added that ships have started moving, oil is flowing, prices are dropping rapidly, and most importantly, Iran will not have nuclear weapons.

On the final day of the G7 summit in Évian, France, world leaders announced their support for this peace agreement. The G7 leaders have described this deal as a historic opportunity that can prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Important decisions were also made at this summit, including providing additional air defense systems and long-range strike capabilities for Ukraine. Additionally, the G7 leaders have supported a multinational maritime initiative led by France and Britain to ensure naval security in the Strait of Hormuz, and have also supported efforts to disarm Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Despite the rumors of a peace deal, Israel has continued its operations in southern Lebanon. On Wednesday, Israeli drone strikes killed at least four people and injured several others. The Israeli military is advancing toward the city of Nabatieh and has not withdrawn from its positions. Iran has warned Israel that it has violated the ceasefire in Lebanon multiple times and that if the attacks continue, a "harsh response" will be given. US President Donald Trump has himself criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying that he needs to be "more responsible" in Lebanon.

This agreement is proof of Pakistan's diplomatic power, which has accomplished what major powers failed to do. However, the success of this agreement depends on Israel's behavior. As long as Israel does not stop its operations in Lebanon, this peace will remain confined to paper. G7 support can give this agreement international legitimacy, but Israel's challenge remains. For Pakistan, this is a golden opportunity to build on this success, but for that, the international community will need to pressure Israel to respect the agreement. Pakistan Times Live is closely monitoring the June 19 signing ceremony and all subsequent developments.
