Ukraine's Massive Attack on Moscow: A New and Bloody Chapter of War

Special Report by Pakistan Times Live

Islamabad: June 19, 2026

Thursday, June 18, 2026, marked a new and terrifying chapter in history. Ukraine launched its largest drone attack of the war against Russia, engulfing Moscow's skies in fire and smoke. According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, air defense systems shot down at least 194 Ukrainian drones approaching the capital. However, several drones managed to evade defense systems and struck Moscow's largest oil refinery, sparking a massive fire in the Kapotnya district.

This attack was not merely a military operation but a powerful message that echoed close to President Putin's residence. On one hand, it targeted Russia's economic backbone; on the other, it showed Moscow residents the reality that the Kremlin had been trying to hide.

Details of the Attack: When Fire Rained Over Moscow

On Thursday morning, a swarm of drones descended upon Moscow's skies. This was Ukraine's largest attack to date. Mayor Sobyanin reported that 194 drones were shot down. However, at least seven drones successfully breached Russian air defenses.

The primary target was the Moscow Oil Refinery, which supplies 40 percent of the capital's petrol needs. The attack caused severe damage to the refinery and sparked a massive fire. Earlier on Tuesday, the same refinery had also been targeted, causing operations to halt.

The impact of this attack was not limited to the refinery. Drone debris damaged residential and commercial buildings in Moscow's suburbs. Seventeen people were injured, including two children. Flights at all four major airports were temporarily suspended.

In response to the attack, Russia launched 7 missiles and 239 drones targeting Ukrainian oil facilities in the Kyiv and Poltava regions.

Ukraine's Objective: Economic and Psychological Warfare

This attack was not just a military operation but part of a carefully planned strategy with three main objectives. The first objective was to target Russia's economic base, as Russia's war machine relies on oil exports for funding and Ukraine aims to weaken Russia's military capability by damaging this vital source. The second objective was to expose Moscow residents to the reality of war. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said in response to the attack that Russia started an aggressive war against us and has been killing our people for years, now that you know what is happening, ask Putin when he intends to end it. The third objective was to apply pressure at the negotiating table, and President Zelenskyy described this attack as a means to pressure Russia into negotiations.

Global Response: Hopes and Fears for a Ceasefire

This attack has once again forced world leaders to reconsider their positions. President Trump's stance is that after the Iran deal, he has announced he will focus his attention on Ukraine, stating that Russia should make a peace deal with Ukraine. He mentioned that he has had very good conversations with both Putin and Zelenskyy and believes both sides want to end the war.

In Russia's response, Putin has not yet made any immediate comment, as he was busy with a summit of Southeast Asian leaders in Kazan. However, a Kremlin aide dismissed Trump's position, saying he was filled with harmful ideas. The European Union reaffirmed its support for Ukraine, and even before this attack, European leaders had condemned Russian attacks on Kyiv, which had damaged a thousand-year-old monastery.

The Path Ahead: War or Peace?

This attack marks the beginning of a new phase in the war. Its possible outcomes could vary. Russia could respond forcefully to this attack, which could escalate the war further, and a Russian deputy has already called for ruthlessly striking the enemy. On the other hand, new negotiations could potentially begin under Trump's mediation, though Ukraine's operation could be an attempt to strengthen its position before negotiations. Russia is facing a severe petrol shortage and is being forced to import fuel by sea, and if such attacks continue, Russia's economy could weaken further. As a result of this war, there could be an increase in oil prices in global markets, which would impact the world economy.

Analysis by Pakistan Times Live

Ukraine's attack marks the beginning of a new and dangerous phase of the war. Ukraine has proven that it can not only defend its own territory but also strike deep into Russia and inflict damage. This attack is evidence of Ukraine's growing drone capabilities.

This attack carries a dual message. On one hand, it's an attempt to break Russia's economic backbone, and on the other, it's a means to show Moscow residents the reality that the Kremlin is trying hard to hide.

However, a strong response from Russia is also expected in retaliation for this attack. This war has now reached a point from which it is difficult to retreat. Now it remains to be seen how world leaders, especially Trump, handle this situation. Can they bring both sides to the negotiating table, or will this war escalate further?

Pakistan Times Live is closely monitoring this situation and will continue to provide further analysis and news in the coming days.
