Venezuela: A Land of Earthquakes
Venezuela is located at the convergence of the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates, making it a hotspot for earthquakes. Over the past four centuries, approximately 180 earthquakes have caused varying degrees of damage in Venezuela.
The 1812 Catastrophic Earthquake: 30,000 Deaths
The deadliest earthquake in Venezuela's history occurred on March 26, 1812. This earthquake had a magnitude of 7.4 and struck on the Boconó Fault System. It caused widespread devastation in the cities of Mérida and Caracas, with an estimated 30,000 people losing their lives. This earthquake is remembered not only for its intensity but also for the vast scale of its destruction.
The 1967 Caracas Earthquake: Modern Era Disaster
On July 29, 1967, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck near Caracas. This earthquake killed between 240 and 300 people and injured 1,536. The most shocking aspect of this earthquake was that modern 10 to 12-story buildings were destroyed, while older and weaker structures remained standing. Four major buildings in Caracas completely collapsed, and 161 out of 808 high-rise buildings were damaged.
An 80-year-old pensioner, Maria Romero, stated that the 2026 earthquake was even worse than the 1967 earthquake.
The 2026 Devastating Series
June 24, 2026, marked another dark day in Venezuela's history. Two major earthquakes—one of magnitude 7.2 and another of magnitude 7.5—struck Venezuela within one minute. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake struck at 6:04 PM local time, with its epicenter near the community of Morón, approximately 168 kilometers west of Caracas. Just 40 seconds later, an even stronger earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck.
This was the largest earthquake to hit Venezuela in over 125 years.
Casualties and Damage
These earthquakes caused widespread destruction in Caracas and surrounding areas. Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodríguez declared a national state of emergency. She reported that at least 32 people had died and more than 700 were injured. However, the USGS PAGER system had predicted that possible deaths could exceed 1,000.
In the Altamira neighborhood of Caracas, a 22-story building completely collapsed. In the Chacao municipality, two buildings collapsed, killing three people. Venezuela's main international airport, Maiquetía, was severely affected and closed indefinitely.
Eyewitness Accounts
Residents of Caracas reported cracks in building walls and broken glass. Electricity and internet services were also disrupted. People came out of their homes and stayed outside in fear. 56-year-old Coro Martínez said: "Things fell inside the house, dishes broke inside the refrigerator. I have never experienced anything like this."
Relief Efforts and International Response
Venezuela's interim government prioritized rescue and relief operations. Security forces, firefighters, and volunteers are engaged in rescue efforts.
The international community also announced aid for Venezuela. Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, Jordan, and other countries offered assistance. The United States also announced it would send aid.
Conclusion
These devastating earthquakes in Venezuela are the most destructive natural disaster since 1812. With 32 deaths and more than 700 injured, and widespread infrastructure damage, this event highlights Venezuela's seismic nature and the risks of natural disasters in the region.
