The war between Russia and Ukraine has entered a new and dangerous phase. Ukraine has sharply escalated long-range drone strikes deep inside Russian territory, while Russian forces are showing a marked slowdown on the ground front.

Ukraine's Long-Range Drone Campaign

In recent weeks, Ukraine has used its newest generation of drones to strike targets far inside Russia. Among the most notable attacks was a strike on the Tyumen oil refinery in Western Siberia, located more than 2,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the operation was carried out using new drone models built by Fire Point, a pioneering Ukrainian defense company.

Ukrainian forces have also struck two key Russian satellite communication centers near Moscow, which Russia reportedly relied on to monitor Ukrainian troop movements. The strikes caused serious damage to antennas and electronic infrastructure at both facilities.

Fuel and Power Crisis in Crimea

Ukraine has intensified operations in Crimea as well, using long-range drones to hit major oil facilities on both sides of the Kerch Strait. The strikes disrupted fuel supplies, triggered power outages, and cut transport links between the peninsula and mainland Russia.

Russian Ground Advances Losing Momentum

Data shows that Russia's territorial gains have slowed considerably. Between late May and late June, Russian forces made only limited progress compared to previous months. Analysts note that May was Russia's worst month for territorial gains since late 2023.

Despite this, President Putin has claimed his forces are close to capturing the key city of Kostyantynivka, a claim partially acknowledged by Ukrainian sources monitoring the front.

Belarus Steps Back

In a significant development, Belarus has deactivated equipment on its territory that was previously used to guide Russian drones toward Ukrainian cities. The move came after President Zelenskyy publicly warned Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko that Ukraine would act if Minsk did not stop allowing its territory to be used this way.

Human Cost of the War

The human toll continues to mount, with combined military casualties on both sides estimated at over one million according to various international assessments. Russian strikes have also worsened Ukraine's energy crisis, further straining its economy.

Prospects for Peace

Survey data suggests that more than 60% of people in Russia support peace negotiations, while a majority in Ukraine appear open to territorial compromises to end the war. However, given the hardened positions of both governments — Russia demanding Ukrainian withdrawal from Donbas and recognition of Crimea, and Ukraine refusing to compromise its sovereignty — a decisive peace settlement appears unlikely in the near term.

The war, now well into its fifth year, shows no clear sign of reaching a resolution anytime soon. Stay connected with The Pakistan Times Live for the latest world news update on this and other developing global stories.
