Araghchi Accuses Ukraine of Attacking Iranian Ship at Israel's Behest
Iran's Araghchi Accuses Ukraine of Attacking Iranian Ship at Israel's Behest to Drag Europe Into War
The Pakistan Times — Islamabad, July 27, 2026
A deadly strike on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea has triggered a sharp diplomatic exchange between Tehran and Kyiv, with Iran's foreign minister alleging Israeli involvement in an attack that Ukraine says targeted sanctioned military cargo. Reports from Reuters, the Times of Israel, and Iran's own foreign ministry statement outline a rapidly escalating dispute that is now drawing in the European Union as well.
Araghchi's Allegation Against Ukraine and Israel
In a post on X, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "attacked an Iranian commercial vessel, killing a sailor," describing the strike as, in his words, "a blatant UN Charter violation done at Israel's behest to drag Europe into its war." Araghchi did not present public evidence to support the allegation that Israel had directed the operation, and neither Israel nor Ukraine has confirmed any such coordination. Iran's foreign ministry, in a separate statement, said the attack caused an explosion aboard the vessel that killed one sailor and injured several others, and confirmed that Tehran had summoned Ukraine's acting chargé d'affaires to lodge a formal protest over what it called a "hostile and criminal" act.
Ukraine's Account of the Strike
According to Zelensky's own statement on Saturday, Ukrainian forces carried out "long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea," targeting vessels allegedly involved in military cargo shipments linked to Iran, along with a Russian warship. Ukraine's ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, told Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 that the vessel Kyiv struck was reportedly carrying Iranian-made drone and missile components destined for Russia's war effort against Ukraine. Korniychuk described such shipments as legitimate military targets under Ukraine's rules of engagement, framing the strike as consistent with previous Ukrainian operations against Iran-Russia military supply lines, according to the same Channel 12 report.
Iran Pushes for International Response
Beyond his social media statement, Araghchi reportedly raised the incident directly with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, according to Iran's foreign ministry. Iranian officials said Araghchi urged the EU, the UN Security Council, and the broader international community to take "decisive" action, calling for accountability for what Tehran describes as the strike's "perpetrators" and their supporters. Iran's foreign ministry statement also claimed the attack threatened the security of all nations bordering the Caspian Sea, a characterisation that has not been independently verified by other regional governments at the time of publication.
A Widening, Multi-Front Conflict
Separately, Zelensky has alleged that Russia supplied Iran with satellite imagery of Gulf states and US military installations, a claim reported by Ukrainian officials but not confirmed by Moscow or Tehran. Analysts cited by Reuters and regional outlets have described Ukraine's entry into this front as a notable expansion of the broader Iran-Israel-US conflict, given that Kyiv's targeting of Iran-linked military cargo places it in direct confrontation with Tehran for what would be the first time in this war.
What Comes Next
Iranian officials have said the Caspian Sea strike "cannot go unanswered," though Tehran has not detailed what form any response might take. European officials involved in the call with Araghchi have not yet issued a public statement on whether the EU will act on Iran's request for measures against Ukraine. The Pakistan Times will continue to follow official statements from Tehran, Kyiv, and Brussels as this story develops.
