China's Mega Typhoon Triggers Mass Evacuation of 2 Million People
The Pakistan Times Islamabad Times
Typhoon Bavi has caused widespread destruction along China's eastern coastal areas. It is the second major storm to hit the country in a single week, forcing authorities to move more than 2 million people to safer locations.
Reports say the storm, which was 1,500 kilometers wide and had wind speeds of 144 kilometers per hour, badly affected coastal areas in eastern China. Major cities like Zhejiang, Fujian, and Shanghai had already been warned about the danger, and people were moved to safety before the storm hit.
Experts believe this storm is a sign of the growing risks linked to climate change. According to reports, the large-scale evacuations helped prevent many possible deaths.
What made this storm unusual was that its effects were not limited to the coast. Its circulation pulled moisture from the Pacific Ocean deep into China's interior, causing heavy rains in Beijing and parts of northeastern China. This is a rare occurrence, showing how complex weather systems are becoming and the growing dangers of a changing climate.
Typhoon Bavi has already caused 17 deaths in the Philippines and has also led to loss of life and damage in China. More than 400 flights were canceled, and 100,000 people were moved to safety in Beijing alone.
Experts say events like this highlight the need for global cooperation to deal with climate change. The international community must work together to face this growing challenge.
