Devastating Floods and Landslides in Bangladesh: Dozens Killed, Millions Affected
The Pakistan Times Islamabad Times
Heavy monsoon rains in Bangladesh have triggered severe flooding and landslides, causing widespread destruction. According to the Ministry of Disaster Management, the death toll has risen to 51, while 39 others have been injured. More than one million people have been affected across seven districts, with thousands of families stranded in floodwaters.
Reports indicate that the highest number of casualties occurred in Cox's Bazar, where 28 people lost their lives, including 15 locals and 13 Rohingya refugees. In Chattogram, 13 deaths were reported, while Bandarban recorded 6, Rangamati 3, and Moulvibazar 1.
Tragedy in Rohingya Refugee Camps
The world's largest Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar have also suffered significant damage. On July 8, a landslide struck a religious school in Camp 5, killing five children. The temporary shelters built on hillsides are extremely vulnerable during the monsoon season.
Challenges in Relief Operations
Floodwaters have severely damaged roads, bridges, and power infrastructure, hindering relief efforts. The army and navy have been deployed to assist in rescue operations. The government has allocated emergency relief supplies and food aid for affected families.
The Climate Change Challenge
Experts warn that climate change is increasing the intensity of heavy rains and the risk of floods in Bangladesh. As one of the world's most disaster-prone countries, Bangladesh continues to face growing threats from extreme weather events linked to climate change.
