A speedboat carrying Indian tourists capsized near the popular tourist island of Phu Quoc in southern Vietnam on Saturday, killing at least 15 Indian nationals and leaving several others injured.

According to local authorities, the boat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and 4 crew members when it overturned approximately 400 meters from the shore. The vessel was returning to An Thoi International Port after a trip to Hon Me Rut Ngoai Island when the accident occurred.

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. Local media reports indicated that sea conditions at the time were rough, with strong winds and high waves reported in the area.

Rescue operations were launched immediately after the accident. Nearby tourist boats reached the scene quickly and began pulling passengers from the water. Vietnamese border guards, navy, and coast guard also participated in the rescue efforts.

A total of 21 people were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. However, many victims were trapped inside the overturned vessel, which made rescue operations challenging.

The Indian Embassy in Hanoi has set up control rooms in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to assist the families of the victims. The embassy described the incident as "tragic" and said it is working with Vietnamese authorities to identify the victims and contact their families.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the incident and extended his condolences to the families of the victims.

Eyewitnesses reported that the weather at the time of the accident was rough, with strong winds and large waves. One eyewitness said: "We saw the boat rocking and then it suddenly capsized. We went closer immediately and tried to pull people out of the water."

This incident raises concerns about tourist safety in southern Vietnam. Authorities have stated that after a full investigation, safety measures will be reviewed to prevent such incidents in the future.
