Rawalakot Protest: Joint Action Committee Claims Five Supporters Killed as Police Await Verification

Joint Action Committee Alleges Five Deaths in Rawalakot

The banned Joint Action Committee (JAC) has claimed that five of its supporters were killed during an alleged firing incident involving security forces in Rawalakot, located in Pakistan-administered Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Authorities, however, have not officially confirmed the reported deaths.

According to a member of the committee's core leadership, more than a dozen people were also injured during the incident. The group alleged that the casualties occurred while participants were preparing to march from the Dreak area toward Rawalakot city before continuing to Muzaffarabad.

Committee Claims Bodies Moved to Medical Camp

A representative of the Joint Action Committee stated that the bodies of the deceased had been taken to a temporary medical camp established near Dreak. The committee further claimed that one of those killed was a close relative of senior core committee member Umar Nazir Kashmiri.

These claims have not been independently verified by authorities at the time of publication.

Police Say Deaths Cannot Be Confirmed Yet

Inspector General of Police for Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Captain (Retired) Liaqat Ali Malik, said law enforcement agencies were unable to verify the reported deaths.

According to the police chief, official confirmation can only be made after the bodies are brought to a hospital, registered in official records, or undergo post-mortem examination.

He also referred to a previous operation conducted against the committee, stating that earlier casualty claims made by the organization were significantly higher than the number officially recorded.

Investigation and Official Verification Continue

Authorities have indicated that they are continuing to assess the situation. No official casualty figures have been released, and independent verification of the committee's claims remains pending.

The developments come amid heightened tensions in the region, where security measures have been increased following recent demonstrations.
