Trump Iran War Threats: President Vows Iran Will 'Pay for Killing US Soldiers

The Pakistan Times | Islamabad Times

US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning that Iran will "pay" for the deaths of American soldiers, as the United States continues its ninth round of airstrikes against Iranian targets. The escalating conflict, now in its second week, has already claimed the lives of 17 US service members and wounded approximately 430 others.

In a post on his social media platform on Monday, Trump declared: "Whenever Iran kills an American soldier, they will pay for that killing many times over." He added that the directive has been sent to the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and every military leader.

US Casualties and Escalating Strikes

The President's warning came after the US announced the death of a service member during a "controlled detonation" of an Iranian drone in Iraq. This follows the identification of two soldiers killed on Friday while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan. Since the start of the five-month-long US-Israel war against Iran, 17 American soldiers have lost their lives.

The US has intensified its airstrikes, targeting Iranian bridges and power installations. In response, Iran has struck US allies Kuwait and Bahrain, home to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet. The White House confirmed that Trump will attend a dignified transfer ceremony for the fallen soldiers at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

Trump's Expanding Targets and the Strait of Hormuz

It remains unclear what specific "directive" Trump has given the Pentagon. However, a US official told Reuters that even before the deadly attack in Jordan, the US had begun moving additional military aircraft, including fighter jets and refueling tankers, to the Middle East.

Last week, Trump threatened to expand targets in Iran to include energy plants and bridges, send ground forces to seize Iran's Kharg Island oil hub, and bomb a deep underground nuclear-related site known as Pickaxe Mountain.

Sources have told Reuters that the recent waves of US strikes on Iran aim to force the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, while also degrading Iranian military capabilities that the US wants destroyed before conducting any more complex operations against the country. The war, including its financial cost, is expected to dominate a US congressional hearing on Tuesday with Hegseth and Kane.

International Concerns and Regional Stability

The escalation of US-Iran tensions has sparked international concern, particularly regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global oil shipments. Countries in the region are closely monitoring the situation, fearing a wider conflict.

Conclusion

As the US-Iran conflict deepens, the international community watches with bated breath. With Trump's recent threats and the escalating military actions, the region stands on the brink of a full-scale war that could have devastating consequences. The US and its allies, including Pakistan, are now bracing for the next phase of this unpredictable confrontation.
