West Indies Beat Pakistan by 90 Runs in First Test, Babar Azam's Fighting Fifty Not Enough

West Indies claimed a 90-run victory over Pakistan in the first Test at the newly christened Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, sealing the win on day four despite a determined half-century from captain Babar Azam in Pakistan's chase. The result puts West Indies 1-0 up in the two-match series.

How the Match Unfolded

According to details from the match, West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first, posting 311 in their opening innings on the back of Shai Hope's 92 and Kaisey Hodge's 84, with Pakistan's Mohammad Ali taking four wickets. Pakistan responded with 282 in their first innings, built around a century from Shan Masood and a well-made 63 from Imam-ul-Haq, before West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves triggered a dramatic middle and lower-order collapse, taking five wickets without conceding a run in the innings, a spell that included five consecutive wicket-maidens, a feat not previously recorded in 146 years of Test cricket history according to broadcaster Samuel Badree. Pakistan had been well-placed at 244 for four before losing their last seven wickets for just 38 runs.

West Indies' second innings saw contributions from Shamar Joseph and Tevin Chanderpaul as the hosts were bowled out for 181, with Mohammad Abbas taking five wickets, setting Pakistan a target of 211 for victory. Chasing that total, Pakistan's innings never gained momentum, with Jayden Seales claiming a five-wicket haul, his fourth in Test cricket, to bowl the tourists out for 120. Babar Azam remained unbeaten on 58, the only Pakistani batter to offer sustained resistance in the chase, but found no support from the rest of the line-up.

Player of the Match

Justin Greaves was named Player of the Match for his all-round contribution, finishing with figures of 5 for 27 in the first innings alongside a first-innings score of 20 and a further 2 for 12 in the second innings. Speaking after the match, Greaves said the performance was "right up there" among his career highlights, adding that he had modelled his bowling on Mohammad Abbas's fuller lengths after facing him earlier in the match.

A Historic Venue

The result marked the first-ever Test match played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, with West Indies securing victory on home debut at the venue. According to commentary from the broadcast, all 40 wickets across the match were taken by fast bowlers, only the fifth time this has occurred in a Test played in the Caribbean.

What Comes Next

The two-match series now moves to its second and final Test, with Pakistan needing a win to level the series. The Pakistan Times will continue to follow the tour as the second Test approaches.
