AJK Election Phase Two Ends Amid Muzaffarabad Tensions
Polling Ends in AJK Election Phase Two Amid Tensions
The Pakistan Times | Islamabad Times
Polling has officially concluded in the second phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) general elections, covering eight constituencies in the Muzaffarabad Division and 12 refugee seats across Pakistan. Voting began at 8:00 a.m. and ended according to the scheduled time under strict security arrangements.
According to the Election Commission, polling in LA-27 (Muzaffarabad-I) was postponed because of heavy rainfall and a landslide. More than 400,000 registered voters were eligible to cast their ballots for the refugee seats during this phase of the election.
Tensions remained high in Muzaffarabad after recent protests. Internet services were suspended in parts of the city following demonstrations by supporters of a banned group. The protests came a day after clashes between demonstrators and police that resulted in one reported death and several road closures across the city.
Security remained tight throughout polling, with thousands of police and security personnel deployed to maintain law and order. Election officials said the voting process continued under enhanced security measures in sensitive constituencies.
After polling ended, political parties began exchanging allegations regarding the election process. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) accused each other of irregularities, while election authorities have not officially confirmed these claims. The Election Commission is expected to review complaints submitted by candidates and political parties under the legal process.
Analysis
The second phase of the AJK elections concluded in a challenging security environment. The focus will now shift to vote counting, official results, and the Election Commission's response to any complaints filed by political parties.
