Polling Continues in AJK as Muzaffarabad Faces Security Challenges
AJK Election Phase Two Voting Begins Amid Tensions
The Pakistan Times | Islamabad Times
Voting is underway in the second phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) general elections as thousands of voters head to polling stations across Muzaffarabad Division and refugee constituencies. The election is taking place under strict security after recent unrest raised concerns about the law and order situation.
Polling began at 8:00 a.m. in the scheduled constituencies. However, the Election Commission postponed voting in LA-27 (Muzaffarabad-I) after heavy rainfall and a landslide affected access to polling stations.
More than 400,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots for 12 refugee seats, while polling is continuing in constituencies across Muzaffarabad, Jhelum Valley, and Neelum.
Tight Security Across Polling Stations
Authorities have deployed around 18,000 security personnel, including police and Rangers, to ensure peaceful voting. Election officials have declared several constituencies highly sensitive and increased security measures in those areas.
Chief Election Commissioner Justice (Retd.) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal said all election materials had been delivered on time and polling staff had reached their assigned stations under strict security arrangements.
Internet Suspension After Protests
Internet services in parts of Muzaffarabad were suspended following protests by supporters of a banned group. The demonstrations came after clashes with police on Friday in which at least one person was killed.
Roadblocks remain in several areas of the city, although election officials say polling is continuing according to schedule.
Voters Call for Better Representation
Many voters said they wanted to elect leaders who would speak for the people and address local issues. Election authorities have appealed to citizens to vote peacefully and help ensure a transparent electoral process.
Analysis
The second phase of the AJK elections is being held in a challenging security environment. Despite tensions, authorities are aiming to complete polling peacefully. Voter turnout and the overall security situation are expected to play an important role in shaping the election outcome.
