The Pakistan Times — August 20, 2026
More than 100 people have been killed after a gold mine collapsed in the western region of the Central African Republic near the border with Cameroon, according to local officials.
The incident occurred in the Zamboui area, where a large section of the mine reportedly collapsed while a number of people were present at the site.
107 Bodies Recovered
According to Adamo Abdoun, mayor of the Cameroonian border town of Garoua-Boulaï, 107 bodies have so far been recovered from the rubble.
Videos circulating on social media appear to show a large slope suddenly collapsing onto people gathered near the mining site. Other people can be seen running from the area as the ground gave way.
People Still Trapped
A worker who witnessed the incident said the ground completely collapsed, burying people underneath the debris.
The witness also indicated that some people may still be trapped beneath the rubble, raising concerns that the death toll could increase as recovery operations continue.
Rescue and Recovery Efforts
Authorities and local residents are continuing efforts to recover victims from the collapsed mine. The difficult conditions at the site could make rescue operations challenging.
The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been fully established. Mining accidents in the region can be linked to unstable ground conditions and unsafe mining practices, but authorities will need to determine the specific circumstances surrounding this incident.
Death Toll Could Rise
With reports that people may remain trapped underground, officials are expected to continue searching the site.
The recovery of 107 bodies already makes the incident one of the deadliest recent mining accidents reported in the region. Further information about the number of survivors and missing people is expected as authorities assess the situation.
The Pakistan Times will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
