Qatar's PM Meets Iranian Leadership in Tehran, Calls for Regional De-escalation

Qatar's Prime Minister has held high-level talks with senior Iranian officials in Tehran, adding fresh momentum to the wider diplomatic push aimed at cooling tensions in the Middle East. Here's what was discussed during the meetings and what it could mean for the ongoing efforts to ease the region's conflict.


Qatar's PM Holds Talks in Tehran


Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, travelled to Tehran on Thursday for meetings with senior Iranian officials, including Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. According to Qatar's Foreign Ministry, the talks focused on regional developments and efforts to de-escalate tensions while creating the right conditions for renewed dialogue.


Call to Resume Diplomacy


During the meeting with Ghalibaf, Sheikh Mohammed stressed the need to resume the diplomatic process, describing dialogue as the best way to resolve differences and prevent further escalation in the region. He also underlined the importance of respecting the sovereignty of neighbouring states and ensuring freedom of navigation in the region's waterways.


Strait of Hormuz Talks Continue


In his separate meeting with Foreign Minister Araghchi, discussions also touched on a proposed phased plan for the Strait of Hormuz, including ideas for a temporary shipping corridor and a joint effort to clear mines from the waterway. Araghchi reportedly thanked Qatar for its continued mediation efforts and support for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis.


Iran's Response


According to Iranian state media, Ghalibaf briefed the Qatari delegation on the current state of talks and reaffirmed Iran's commitment to a negotiated settlement, while stressing that the United States needed to fulfil its obligations under a memorandum of understanding reached earlier during the conflict.


Part of a Wider Regional Push


Qatar's visit comes amid a flurry of regional diplomatic activity, with Pakistani officials also having travelled to Tehran earlier this week and Oman continuing separate talks with Iran over the Strait of Hormuz and the broader dispute with Washington. Qatar has played a central mediating role throughout the conflict, having helped broker an earlier ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran.
