Ishaq Dar, Araghchi Discuss Pakistan-Saudi-Turkey Defence Pact
Ishaq Dar and Araghchi Discuss Regional Security and Defence Pact
The Pakistan Times | Islamabad Times
Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday, discussing regional developments and Pakistan's recently concluded defence agreement with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.
During the conversation, Dar explained the objectives of the trilateral defence arrangement and its stated focus on strengthening strategic cooperation and contributing to regional peace and security. The discussion came shortly after Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye concluded a joint defence agreement in Makkah.
The development has attracted particular attention because of the wider security situation in the region. Iran has publicly indicated that it does not see the new Pakistan-Saudi-Türkiye security arrangement as something it should fear. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran viewed regional security cooperation as potentially positive if it remained inclusive and addressed genuine security concerns.
Pakistan Explains Objectives of Defence Cooperation
Dar's conversation with Araghchi provided an opportunity for Islamabad to explain that the agreement is intended to strengthen strategic cooperation among the participating countries and contribute to regional stability.
Pakistan already has a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia, signed in September 2025. The agreement strengthened the long-standing defence relationship between Islamabad and Riyadh and established a broader framework for security cooperation.
The new trilateral arrangement with Türkiye adds another dimension to that regional security cooperation. The agreement comes at a time when tensions across the Middle East remain high and regional countries are increasingly discussing ways to strengthen their own security arrangements.
Focus on Regional Peace
The conversation between Dar and Araghchi also highlights Pakistan's diplomatic effort to maintain communication with neighbouring and regional countries while explaining its security commitments.
Islamabad has repeatedly emphasized dialogue, regional stability and peaceful solutions to disputes. At the same time, Pakistan's defence partnerships with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye represent important elements of its broader strategic relationships.
For Iran, the new arrangement is particularly significant because of its geographical proximity and Tehran's wider diplomatic relations with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.
What Happens Next?
The immediate focus is likely to remain on how the new defence arrangement develops in practice and how the three participating countries coordinate their security policies.
For Pakistan, maintaining communication with Iran while strengthening relations with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye presents an important diplomatic balancing challenge. Continued dialogue between Islamabad and Tehran could help prevent misunderstandings and support Pakistan's stated objective of promoting regional peace and stability.
