Ishaq Dar Confirms Three Pakistanis Killed in Houthi Attack on Red Sea Vessel

The PAKISTAN TIMES Islamabad times

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed Wednesday that three Pakistani nationals lost their lives and a fourth was injured after Houthi forces attacked a commercial vessel in the Red Sea, strongly condemning the strike as a violation of international law. Dar shared the update in a post on X, saying Pakistan condemns the attack on what he called a non-combatant commercial vessel in the clearest possible terms.

The vessel, identified as the Tihamah and flagged to Tanzania, was carrying food supplies when it was struck three times by ballistic missiles in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait on Tuesday. The ship caught fire and sustained heavy damage, and according to Yemen's Coast Guard, a further missile was fired even as rescue teams were trying to reach the crew. Four crew members died in total, three Pakistanis and one Indonesian national, while ten others were wounded across the vessel and the rescue effort combined.

According to Dar, Pakistan is now in direct contact with Saudi authorities and Yemen's internationally recognized government to establish exactly what happened and the full circumstances surrounding the strike. He's directed Pakistan's embassy in Riyadh to immediately coordinate with local authorities on retrieving and repatriating the remains of the three deceased Pakistanis, while also making sure the injured Pakistani national receives whatever assistance he needs. Dar extended condolences to the families of those killed and said Pakistan will stay closely engaged with all relevant authorities as the situation develops.

Dar framed the broader stakes plainly too, saying attacks like this one put innocent lives at risk, break international law, and threaten freedom of navigation and maritime security in one of the world's most important shipping corridors. This attack is part of a wider pattern of Houthi strikes on commercial shipping through the Bab al-Mandeb and Red Sea corridor that has continued alongside the broader regional conflict, and it comes just as Pakistani officials have been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts elsewhere in the region aimed at easing tensions between Iran and the United States.
