AJK Elections: Unofficial Results Trickle In From Mirpur Division as PML-N and PPP Split Early Seats

Vote counting stretched into the night across Mirpur Division on Monday as unofficial, unconfirmed results began emerging from the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the Pakistan Peoples Party splitting the earliest declared seats between them. Election officials have stressed that all figures remain provisional until formally announced by the Election Commission of AJK.

What the Election Commission Confirmed

According to the Election Commission of AJK, polling across the 13 constituencies of Mirpur Division was originally scheduled to close at 5pm but was extended by one hour, until 6pm, on the directive of Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal, after an unusually high voter turnout kept queues moving at polling stations past the original deadline. The Commission has reiterated that all results being reported are unofficial and unconfirmed pending formal announcement.

Early Declared Seats

Based on complete unofficial results from individual constituencies, PML-N's Azhar Sadiq won the LA-1 Mirpur seat with 12,298 votes after all 139 polling stations reported. In LA-2 Mirpur-II, PPP candidate Qasim Majeed defeated PML-N's Azeem Bakhsh Chaudhry, securing roughly 12,900 votes against his rival's 8,182. PPP's Chaudhry Yasir Sultan won LA-3 Mirpur-III with 11,676 votes, ahead of PML-N's Chaudhry Muhammad Saeed, who polled 9,832. In LA-4 Mirpur-IV, PML-N's Chaudhry Rukhsar Ahmed defeated PPP's Chaudhry Sohaib Arshad, taking around 20,172 votes to his opponent's 13,865.

Results from Bhimber and Kotli districts continued to be compiled through the night, with contests in several constituencies, including LA-7 Bhimber, still described as too close to call as additional polling station results were tabulated.

A Closely Contested Field

A total of up to 296 candidates from PML-N, PPP, the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, and independent groups contested the 13 seats across Mirpur, Bhimber, and Kotli districts. More than 1.4 million registered voters were eligible to cast ballots in the division, and more than 19,000 security personnel, including Pakistan Army troops and police, were deployed to oversee the process.

An Incident During Polling

Officials confirmed that a person identified by the PPP as one of its political workers died in Kotli district's Nakyal tehsil while polling was under way. Details surrounding the circumstances of the death had not been fully clarified at the time of publication, and authorities had not issued a formal cause.

What Comes Next

According to the Election Commission of AJK, vote counting will continue until results from all 13 Mirpur Division constituencies are finalised and formally announced. Under the Commission's revised three-phase schedule, polling in Muzaffarabad Division and 12 refugee constituencies is set for August 2, followed by Poonch Division on August 10.
