Petrol Price in Pakistan Today: Why Rising Fuel Prices Continue to Burden Millions
The Pakistan Times
For millions of Pakistanis, every petrol price announcement has become more than just a routine government notification. A small increase at fuel stations quickly reaches kitchen tables, public transport fares, and the prices of everyday essentials.
Over the past few years, petrol prices in Pakistan have moved up and down several times, mainly due to changes in international crude oil prices, the value of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar, and government taxes. While global oil markets have seen periods of relief, many Pakistanis believe that fuel remains too expensive for ordinary families.
For transporters, rising diesel and petrol prices mean higher operating costs. Shopkeepers say they have little choice but to increase the prices of goods after transport charges go up. Daily wage workers and salaried employees often feel the greatest pressure because their incomes remain the same while expenses continue to rise.
Every fortnight, the federal government revises petroleum prices after reviewing recommendations from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). The final decision depends on several economic factors, including international oil prices, import costs, exchange rates, and taxes.
Economic experts say that unless global oil prices remain stable and the rupee strengthens, major and long-term relief for consumers may remain difficult. They also believe that improving public transport and reducing dependence on imported fuel could help Pakistan in the future.
For many families, however, the issue goes beyond economics. Every increase in petrol prices means spending more on travel, food, school transport, and other daily necessities. That is why fuel prices remain one of the most closely watched economic indicators in the country.
