Saudi Arabia Announces Maritime Defense Alliance, Pakistan and Türkiye Among 14 Supporting Nations

Saudi Arabia has announced plans to establish a new Maritime Defense Alliance, marking one of the most significant regional security initiatives in recent years. The proposed alliance has already received support from Pakistan, Türkiye and several other countries as Riyadh seeks to strengthen maritime security and protect international shipping routes.

According to the Saudi Ministry of Defense, representatives from 43 countries and the European Union attended an international meeting where the proposed Maritime Defense Alliance was discussed. Under the proposal, Saudi Arabia will serve as the founding and leading nation, while the alliance's permanent headquarters will be established in the Kingdom.

Saudi officials said the initiative is designed to improve cooperation between participating countries in response to growing security challenges affecting regional waters. The alliance aims to increase coordination on maritime surveillance, intelligence sharing, joint military exercises and the protection of commercial shipping.

The announcement comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions across the Middle East, where attacks on commercial vessels and concerns over maritime security have drawn international attention. Analysts believe stronger regional cooperation could help secure vital sea lanes that carry a significant portion of global trade and energy supplies.

Pakistan and Türkiye are among the countries supporting the proposal. Both nations have maintained close defense cooperation with Saudi Arabia over the years and are expected to contribute to discussions on regional security, naval coordination and defense collaboration under the new framework.

Saudi officials emphasized that the proposed Maritime Defense Alliance is intended to promote collective security and stability rather than target any specific country. The Kingdom said participating states would continue consultations before finalizing the alliance's structure, operational responsibilities and long-term objectives.

Defense experts note that protecting strategic waterways has become increasingly important as global trade depends heavily on secure maritime routes. They say stronger international cooperation could reduce risks to commercial shipping and improve emergency response capabilities during regional crises.

The Saudi Ministry of Defense added that further meetings are expected in the coming months as member states continue negotiations on the alliance's legal framework, command structure and future joint operations. Additional countries may also join the initiative before it is formally launched.

If implemented, the Maritime Defense Alliance could become one of the region's largest multinational security partnerships, strengthening cooperation between allied navies while supporting the safety of international shipping and maritime infrastructure.

The Pakistan Times will continue to monitor developments and provide verified updates as official announcements become available.
