GHQ Attack Case: 47 May 9 Convicts Sentenced to 10 Years

A Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court has sentenced 47 proclaimed suspects in the May 9 GHQ attack case to 10 years in prison and fined each of them Rs500,000.

The court also ordered the confiscation of the convicts’ properties. Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Amjad Ali Shah announced the verdict, while Special Prosecutor Zaheer Shah represented the prosecution.

According to the judgment, the accused were found involved in the conspiracy linked to the May 9 violence. The joint investigation team report also identified them as being involved in planning violent protests.

What Happened on May 9?

The May 9 events began after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad in 2023.

Protests spread across several parts of Pakistan, with demonstrations taking place in major cities. Government and military installations were among the locations targeted during the unrest.

One of the most significant incidents occurred at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, where protesters entered the military compound.

The events triggered a major political and legal crisis in Pakistan. Large numbers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf supporters were arrested, while authorities launched investigations and criminal proceedings against people accused of participating in or organizing the violence.

The GHQ case has remained one of the most closely watched cases arising from the May 9 unrest.
